Program DESCRIPTION

The sub-internship program at the University of Washington is designed to give medical students who are interested in matching in urology exposure to our program while providing an immersive educational experience. Sub-interns at the University of Washington function as members of the surgical team, participating in outpatient clinics, inpatient care, emergency procedures, and the operating room.

Traditionally, sub-interns spend a total of four weeks in two different affiliated hospitals in order to achieve the highest level of education and clinical experience possible, but the experience can vary depending on availability. The four participating locations include:

UW Medical Center Surgery Pavilion

University of Washington Medical Center

UWMC is the academic, tertiary care center for UW Medicine. This hospital has several subspecialty clinics, including the Prostate Oncology, Urogynecology and Men’s Health Clinics. Each clinic combines cutting edge research with state of the art technology to achieve superior patient care. The surgical volume is high and diverse, providing medical students with exceptional exposure and skill development.

Harborview Medical Center

Harborview Medical Center

The Level I adult and pediatric trauma center & regional burn center for Pacific Northwest. This is a trauma and reconstruction rotation focus on providing tertiary care for acute injuries and genitourinary reconstructive surgery across the region, as well as primary care to local populations including the indigent, uninsured and underserved.

Seattle Children's Hospital

Perpetually ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals – for over 26 years in a row. The hospital received national rankings in all 10 specialty areas evaluated. Seattle Children's Hospital is a teaching hospital and a regional referral center for differences of sex development, spina bifida, pediatric kidney stones, robotic surgery, and pediatric reconstructive surgery.

VA Puget Sound

VA Puget Sound

A tertiary care center for the VA system. In addition to state-of-the-art medical facilities, the VA PSHCS is the regional referral center for all robotic surgery. The Urology service has a very busy surgical service, and has cases which range from “bread and butter” to complex oncology and kidney stone management.

UWMC - Northwest

Northwest Hospital

The first comprehensive center for the treatment and prevention of kidney stones in the Puget Sound region. The multidisciplinary team includes experts in urology, nephrology and nutrition and cares for patients suffering from acute or recurrent kidney stones. The team treats kidney stones using the latest minimally invasive surgical and nonsurgical procedures. This site also now includes one of our largest clinics with dedicated space for general urology, female pelvic and reconstructive medicine, and transgender care.

Sub-interns are expected to give a 7-minute presentation in an area of urology of their choice near the end of their rotation.

For students who encounter a scheduling conflict due to timing of their school’s rotation, please reach out to us.

  • 06/24/24 – 07/19/24
  • 07/22/24 – 08/16/24
  • 08/29/24 – 09/13/24

Applications are due by February 23, 2024 and will be reviewed in the weeks that follow.  Notifications and selection of preferred rotation dates will follow, and offers are contingent on the successful completion of the required VSLO application.  Applications received after February 23 will be reviewed and decisions based on remaining slots available.

HOW TO APPLY

Due to high demand, the sub-internship application for visiting students is a competitive process. Medical students who would like to be considered for the University of Washington Urology sub-internship are required to submit the following:

  1. CV
  2. Personal statement
  3. Application Form
    • COMLEX/USMLE Step 1 Pass/Fail Score:
    • Clinical rotations and grades
      • Comments about grading system (if any)

UW VSLO application - this step is required if you are selected by the department to do a rotation as a visiting student.
