Program Overview

Established in 1990, the Pediatric Urology Fellowship is distinguished by the broad exposure fellows receive to both complex urologic reconstruction and minimally invasive techniques, including robotic-assisted laparoscopy, in addition to general pediatric urology. The first year is centered on clinical activity while the second year has a research emphasis.

Fellows gain clinical exposure at Seattle Children’s, a 407-licensed-bed facility. The Pediatric Urology service is responsible for approximately 2,000 surgical cases and 14,000 outpatient visits each year. The fellows rotate through four multi-disciplinary clinics: the Neurodevelopmental clinic (Dr. Ahn), the Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine clinic (Dr. Ahn), the Minimally Invasive Surgery/Endourology clinic (Dr. Fernandez), and the Differences in Sexual Development clinic (Dr. Shnorhavorian). They are actively involved in patient care in the operating room, clinic, and inpatient units.

Beginning in the 2021-2022 academic year, both years of the fellowship are ACGME-accredited. In Year 1, the fellow spends the majority of time on patient care responsibilities in the operating room, ambulatory clinic and inpatient units working with the faculty. Year 2 consists of research (80%) with some clinical responsibilities (20%). In the second year, the fellow refines expertise in specific areas of interest, with a significant emphasis on a mentored research project.

During the second year, fellows may engage in basic science or clinical science research. All fellows are expected to design and execute a quality improvement project as well. Areas of research include quality, safety, health services and clinical research. Other areas of study have included late effects of childhood malignancy therapy, long-term fertility outcomes in pediatric oncology patients, robotic/haptic technology research and research in urinary tract infection.
