Biography

Hunter Wessells is Professor and Nelson Chair of the Department of Urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Wessells specializes in genitourinary trauma, reconstructive surgery, and erectile dysfunction, directing a fellowship in trauma and reconstructive urology, and working with trainees to solve the challenging problems of tissue loss and fibrosis. He seeks solutions to urinary stone disease, erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract dysfunction from a number of directions ranging from cell culture systems and mouse models to collaborative multicenter studies funded by NIH, NASA and other agencies. Current investigations include genetic susceptibility to erectile dysfunction; novel therapies for kidney stones; and urological complications of diabetes. He serves as the AUA Guidelines Panel Chair for Male Urethral Stricture, Steering Committee Chair of the NIDDK sponsored Urinary Stone Disease Research Network, member on the NIDDK Strategic Planning Work Group, the Urology representative to the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, and previously as trustee of the American Board of Urology.

An avid outdoors sportsman, Dr. Wessells enjoys open water swimming in the Puget Sound, back country skiing, and tennis. He spends free time with family and friends over a good meal. Weather permitting, he maintains an organic vegetable garden and otherwise immerses himself in the intricacies of Burgundy wines and the works of Conan Doyle, Lovecraft, and Wodehouse.
