MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Colleagues, Alumni, and Friends of the Department,
I am honored and humbled to serve as the fourth Chair of the Department of Urology at the University of Washington. Our rich history now stretches back over six decades of providing the highest quality urologic care to the Pacific Northwest. Our training program now spans five campuses in the greater Seattle area in addition to a WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) experience - including Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Puget Sound VA, Harborview Hospital, UW-Montlake and UW-Northwest Hospitals. We are fortunate to have such a rich and diverse clinical experience which fosters such a great training environment.
This week, we are looking forward to the AUA Annual Meeting in Washington DC which always presents an opportunity to highlight our department’s innovative and impactful research and leadership. We have a robust array of presentations from faculty and trainees that showcase our commitment to advancing the field through scientific discovery, collaboration, and excellence in patient care. Link to Schedule.
Equally important, the AUA allows us the chance to reconnect and strengthen the relationships and friendships that make the urology community so special. If you are planning to attend the meeting, please join us at the Washington DC Marriott Marquis on Sunday, May 17 at 5pm in the Marriott Marquis Salon 15.
I personally will miss my first AUA in over 25 years due to one of my children’s college graduation, but Claire Yang will host the reception where we hope to reconnect with alumni and friends, celebrate our department’s accomplishments, and welcome the next generation of UW Urology leaders. If you can’t make it this year, please plan on next year!
In the coming months, we will welcome visiting sub-interns who will rotate on our service, many aspiring to match into our program for their residency. We look forward to receiving these eager and accomplished medical students and to modeling our department’s core values of belonging, integrity, and innovation.
With a heavy heart, I want to recognize the recent loss, Connor Chestnut. Connor was smart, energetic and affable, having a Midwest charm that reflected his Kansas upbringing. His passing certainly reminds of us the preciousness of life and importance of community, compassion, and caring for one another both inside and outside of medicine. We all miss him greatly.
In closing, I want to end with gratitude and thanks to all in the department and who are supporting us, both near and far. Your partnership and participation continue to strengthen our mission and inspire our work each day. I look forward to serving you in the years to come.
