UW Urology Newsletter: Spring Quarter 2022
Message from the Chair
Dear friends and colleagues:
During my time as a faculty member and now in my role as acting chair, I have had the opportunity to see the expanse and influence of the department. When I joined UW Urology in 1993, there were 14 clinical and 6 research faculty, 12 residents and 3 fellows. This year, we matched 4 outstanding medical students who will start in July, bringing our complement of residents to 19. We now have 9 fellows in 5 fellowship programs. Our clinical faculty includes 35 MDs and 10 Advanced Practice Providers working at 5 different medical center campuses; in addition, we have 8 PhD faculty working in 5 different laboratories. Our clinical and research faculty continue to be successful in securing progressively more research funding from federal sources, foundations, and individual gifts, all of which make UW Urology one of the most productive urology research departments in the country. Amazing growth, indeed.
It’s an honor to have so many department members participating in the upcoming American Urological Association Annual Meeting. A number of our faculty and trainees will give scientific presentations, teach courses, or lead professional groups – all remarkable ambassadors of our department. During the meeting, we will gather at a reception for the ever-growing community of UW Urology alumni, which will offer the chance to reconnect with colleagues and friends after this long hiatus.
Our end-of-year celebrations have been abbreviated for the past two years, but we are planning for in-person graduation activities, our first since 2019. Research Day will be held in the Turner Auditorium in the Health Sciences Building on Saturday, June 18, beginning at 8 AM. The 14th Annual Hirschler Visiting Professor Lecture will be given by Daniel Eun, MD, Professor of Urology at Temple University. Dr. Eun will share his innovations and expertise in robotic surgery, and be followed by research presentations by the residents and fellows. All are invited to attend (see below for details).
Later that evening, we will host a dinner to celebrate our graduating residents and fellows. Dr. Wessells, who will have returned from his sabbatical, will be presiding over the festivities. We in the department are so proud of their accomplishments, and send them off with our best wishes for the future. Their time with us is only the first phase in a lifetime of urologic education, and we hope we have served them well.
