Dear Colleagues,

It is with sadness that I inform you that Dr. Ansell, our founding Chair, passed away on April 2nd 2019.

Julian will be remembered for his tireless dedication to patients, trainees, and research. An inspiration to a generation of urologists at UW, he embodied the academic surgeon who put the patient ahead of all else.

A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Ansell completed his training and was on faculty at Minnesota before being recruited as Chief in 1959. He oversaw the graduation of the first resident,  guided Urology to Department status in 1965, and made many contributions to the field of Urology including the concept of early bladder exstrophy closure.

To the very end Julian demonstrated a dedication to others. A week before his death in fact, he finalized the creation of an endowed fund named in his mother’s honor, with the goal of recognizing the contributions patients make to our mission of improving health.

Sincerely,

Hunter
