Biography

Dr. Gabrielle Akwele Nortey grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She then spent a year serving with AmeriCorps as a Patient Benefits Advocate in Pittsburgh, PA where she helped underinsured patients obtain social services including prescription, housing, disability, and nutrition assistance.

She went on to obtain a Masters of Science in Physiology from North Carolina State University. She later matriculated to UNC Chapel Hill where she obtained her medical degree. During her time there, she was selected as a Howard Holderness Distinguished Medical Scholar and Clinician Leadership in Quality and Safety Scholar and was funded to complete a one-year research fellowship. She led projects in quality improvement in urology procedure clinic and in patient engagement among historically marginalized communities with bladder cancer.  She is driven by her goal to see racial/ethnic healthcare disparities eliminated. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, movies, spending time with friends and family, and gassing up Dr's Overton, Rothenberger, and Purcell.
